Description

Crafty Computer Controllers with MaKey MaKey

Taught by Corinne Okada Takara

Enjoy building things with your daughter? Come make a playful computer interactive device made of cardboard, fabric, pipe cleaners, modeling clay and other readily available materials. The working prototype you create will hook up to a computer via a MaKey MaKey device to become a game controller or a musical instrument. As a mother-daughter team, combine fun building materials and simple circuitry in this design challenge. Be surprised by which materials are conductive and which are insulators as you create your invention. Give purpose to your design; how might your creation address a community need? Might your playful device encourage recycling, exercise, crosswalk safety, or water conservation at water fountains? Explore building a game in Scratch to control with your newly designed device.

Make-HER workshops are open to girls aged 8 - 12 and their mothers (or other adult female mentors). Our #LadyMaker educators have designed content specifically for this age group. Therefore the workshops are not appropriate for those under age eight, please no younger siblings. You may cancel up to 48 hours in advance through this site. Those who do not show without cancellation will be prevented from registering for subsequent Make-HER workshops. Each workshop requires a separate registration. Each registration reserves spots for both you and your daughter.
